EDT 8110 - Learning in a Digital World
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Instructor and course designers are introduced to the relationship between learning theory and teaching practices that incorporate digital technologies to enhance students’ learning. This course provides an introduction to the research and science of learning ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
This course was designed to improve your skillset as a learning professional, by introducing you to the science of learning. The science of learning is a new school of thought that takes learnings from the field of neuroscience and applies them to teaching. It was the perfect beginning to this degree program.
EDT 8120 - Instructional Design for Digital Learning
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Participants will learn the basic concepts and elements of an instructional design model. The course teaches the “backward design” approach and “alignment” to ensure that courses design focus on the “big ideas” ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
The Big Idea of this course is how to create fun and engaging units that result in effective transfer of the unit's big idea. The course was centered on the Understanding by Design guides by authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe and published in 2011 and 2012, respectively. This course provided us with an understanding of how to create the guardrails needed for effective learning.
EDT 8130 - Making Online Courses Interactive
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Examines the theory and practices of using educational technologies to ensure online courses include ample interaction. Class will include the knowledge and skills necessary to utilize some of these educational technologies ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
The course introduced us to The Community of Inquiry, which is both a theory and framework for creating interactive online learning experiences. The Big Idea of this course is how to make online course interactive by using the Community of Inquiry model which consists of three presences; Social Presence (the need to be a part of the group), Cognitive Presence (the need for knowledge and self-actualization) and Teaching Presence (the guiding light through the journey of learning).
EDT 8140 - Learning Management Systems & Evaluation
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Examines integrating curriculum with educational technologies such as learning management systems and the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate the quality of online courses ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
In this course we learned how to objectively compare two Educational Technology tools. Specifically, we compared two Learning Management Systems and how to accurately and objectively share our findings. We also obtained our APPQMR certification for Higher Education.
EDT 8150 - Digital Professional Development
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Students will use elements of instructional design and storyboarding techniques to translate instruction into various types of multimedia professional development workshops ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
In this course we learned about the theory of Andragogy and how it differs from the more traditional Pedagogy. The course focused on the six assumptions of Andragogy; The learners’ need to know, The learners’ self-concept, The role of the learners’ experiences, The learners’ readiness to learn, The learners’ orientation to learning and The learners’ motivation. Additionally, we learned how to effectively utilize video editing software and present to learners through video presentations.
EDT 8210 - Applied Psychology Learning Theory for Digital Learning
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Introduction to multimedia learning theory and how theory can be integrated into instructional design ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
In this course we learned about the psychology behind the way we, as humans, learn. Specifically, this class focused on the cognitive load theory and the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. This course provided several principles which are key for the design of effective courses that will lead to long term understanding.
EDT 8220 - Instructional Design Concepts and Theories
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Students will explore a variety of instructional design concepts and theories, software applications, and how instructional design theory can be applied to practice ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
This course introduced me Instructional Design process. It prepared me to function in a consultative manner for designing instruction. Up to this point I have only created learnings that i was also the SME. To do this, we learned about and used the following tools; Needs Analysis, Task Analysis, Learner Analysis, and Learning Evaluation.
EDT 8230 - Digital Scholarship of Teaching: Research Methodologies
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Students will conceptually explore different research methodologies in relation to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques will be discussed ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
This course focused on the different methods of research and how to use them to explain or justify an approach to a learning event or proposed learning study. We learned about the Qualitative studies and Quantitative studies, along with the different reliability and validity measures. All of this played a significant role in EDT8240.
EDT 8240 - Digital Scholarship of Teaching: Literature Review
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Students will explore techniques used for constructing a research-based literature review in the field of instructional technology ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
In this course we learned how to prepare for and how to compose an effective literature review. This will be crucial in my success in future scholarly endeavors. The class introduce a coding form which is a great help with gathering the data needed for large studies. It finished with a full literature review for a topic that we chose and can continue to build upon later in our career.
EDT 8250 - Digital Citizenship
Content Summary from Wright State University’s Course Catalog
Examines the issues and responsibilities of using digital technologies. Consideration of issues of intellectual property rights, ethics, managing online reputation, and professional responsibilities ("2016-2017 Academic Catalog" n.d.).
Reflection on Learning
This course was the capstone of our degree program and, appropriately, required us to use the skills learned throughout the program to create an interesting, engaging and relevant learning moment using Articulate Storyline. The learning we created was to set up a simulation. This was a great learning opportunity, which has allowed me to highlight my skills to my peers.
